As long as Shire Hall has existed the Foyer has been host to commercial sales and displays. Indeed from 1792 to 1858 this large space was Chelmsford’s original Corn Exchange. Even then the benefits of attracting customers due to its prime position and direct access to the town centre were obvious. Today the Foyer can still be hired at weekends and evenings for direct sales to the public. In the 1930s the area was lavishly rebuilt in the ‘art deco’ style which included marble walls, mosaic floor, walnut doors and leaded windows. This splendid, imposing space can be used in conjunction with the County
Room as an impressive reception area
